Frequently Asked Questions
Where
are your Studio's?
We currently have two studio locations. Cardiff & Hereford. Both are well equipped with full PA systems, microphone’s & keyboards. Facilities
at each include: refreshments, disabled access, toilets and parking
How long will it take me to learn to sing? That will be down to you, and how much practice you are prepared to do. It could take you as little as a month or it could take you a year or more. Another factor is physical dexterity. You may be showed something and do it the first time, for someone else, it may take a few attempts to get it right. Everybody is different and I work to each person’s pace and ability.
How often do I book a lesson? That is entirely up to you and your budget. Ideally I would suggest once a week/fortnight, but there are students who come twice a week, and others who I see every 2-3 months. However, I would suggest that you practice what you learned with me between your lessons, a few times a weeks, to help keep your voice in tip-top shape.
What happens during my lesson? Everyone takes up singing for various reasons. You will hear an improvement in your voice from the first lesson. Generally the lesson is split into 2 halves.: the first half concentrates on exercises for your voice development, the second half allows you to sing the songs that you enjoy singing, and work on delivering that song (I never dictate what you should sing – although I may make some suggestions). I will also cover areas or topics that I feel may be of use to you as you develop as a singer. You are welcome to ask as many questions throughout the lesson. Refreshments are freely available I don’t mind if you bring someone along with you for your lesson and I ask if parents will accompany their children when they first come, however subsequent lessons I’m happy if the parents want to leave their children with me.
What equipment do you have that I can use? I use a full PA (Public Address) system. I use a 16 channel mixer and Shure microphone. I have quite a collection of backing tracks, which you are welcome to use. I have recording facilities so you may record yourself singing during your lesson, or you may arrange to make a demo CD. There is also a keyboard available.
I was told that you have to be born with a good voice – Is that true? No, definitely not. Singing is just like lifting weights. Through proper training, your vocal ability grows.
I sound croaky when I sing certain notes, yet I can sing higher than the notes I croak on – what’s happening? Sound to me like you are experiencing your passagio or break point between your head and chest voice. Through exercises, you will learn to smooth out your cords so that your voice will sound stronger and no longer croaky.
I’ve damaged my voice through screaming, shouting or abusive habits. Is it possible to fix? Learning how to sing properly can certainly help fix certain problems such as hoarsness, strain, croakiness, swollen cords etc. I will also work with people who have had throat surgery under the guidance of their Doctor. However, I would suggest having any problems checked out by a Doctor before embarking on a voice training programme.
